The best guide for anything would to probably go out and look at other professional works and take notes. Then you can look at tutorials for similar effects and add what you see in the professional works to it. Kinda copying, but it's how you learn I guess. Just like how you copy the math teachers method during class (If you actually do any work during school that is XD)
